I have been wanting to knit a Faroese shawl for some time and finally completed this one. The shawl has two wings with shoulder shaping, a center lace panel, and lace edging, all of which are distinguishing features of Faroese shawls. The overall look is that of a butterfly. The shawl style is named after the Faroe Islands where the style was developed. The islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, located NNW of UK and halfway between Norway and Iceland. About 50,000 people live on this archipelago. Shawls made by the islanders are highly prized.

Beautiful Janis. Was it knit top-down or bottom-up?
I have a couple of the Faroese shawls, top down. I love them!!
They don't fall off my shoulders because of the shaping, even if I am
wearing a silky material blouse, it stays put.
A friend of mine has made the patterns that I test knitted for her.
Hi Jackie. Thanks for your kind words. The Just Cozy shawl is knit top down with the bottom lace done side to side by casting off one stitch every two rows. I'm not sure what this technique is called, but it takes a long time to bind off 464 stitches. After casting on an additional 20 stitches as the bottom, the lace is done side to side casting off from the bottom of the shawl. But it was a great experience and I, too, love the shoulder shaping of the Faroese style.
I'm still getting the Helen Steward TTS4. The first 2 are using the garter stitch and I just can't get myself to do them, I find the stitch boring.
What i'm getting to is, The edging you described. I just finished the Prairie Shawl and it has a similar edging. Premieryarns.com has the pattern.

Its a quick knit too me 4 days only because I wasn't sure how to do the edge..ha.
I believe we have corresponded before on Ravelry, I just can't think what for,I'll have to go and look.
Hi Jackie
I checked and I don't have you as a friend on Ravelry. My Ravelry name is Janisdoll. Add me, since I searched for Jackie C on Ravelry and can't find you.
This side to side edging is the second time I had a pattern that did this method. The first time it took me a bit of time to figure out what the heck they were talking about. But then I figured out that since I was using circular needles, I just capped off one end and used a double pointed needle to do the cast-one-off lace edging, using one of the circular needle ends and the DP. Here is a link to the triangular shawl where I did my first side-to-side: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Janisdoll/lace-edge-garter-stitch-shawl
I love the Helen Stewart patterns and have made quite a number of her designs, but have been disappointed in her TSS groups as I usually only like one or two of her designs in what is a pricey package. I agree that garter stitch can be boring, though occasionally I find it a bit relaxing as I am usually doing really intricate projects that require my complete attention. It's nice to be brainless now and then. And for TSS4-#2 I am contemplating where I'm going to add beads in the lace edging so I won't be bored for the entire shawl.
